On a morning walk through West Philly one spring day I came across this church and was struck by the sunlight breaking through the shadows cast by the building and trees. The contrast of the bright blue of the shadow and the golden cream of the walls was eye-catching, and I was inspired to make a painting. I’m often drawn to landscapes that feature really bright areas contrasted by really dark shadows.
